OnStage partner and music critic Khari “KayEmGee” Gzifa just dropped a review of 5 videos featured in our OnStage Video Showcase. You can check it in the video player on your right and on our YouTube channel. Khari is more than an audiophile; he’s a genuine musicologist with a broad array of knowledge across musical genres and also rocks the mike as front vocalist for local band Bombaye. Whenever you hear his critique of music you can rest assured you’re getting the best music assessment available in the DMV. So, as he says in the wrap, if you’ve got a video or think a recent video you've seen is hot, let us know. If it’s good we’ll feature it in the OnStage Video Showcase. If it’s great it may be one that he reviews next time. Contact us here or holla at us on Twitter @_OnStageDC.

Kudos to Wale whose Ambition album is still strong at #10 on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop top album charts. As Tabi Bonney noted on an interview with PatisDope.com Wale’s success is important for all DMV artists because it brings attention, “It helps everybody, it opens up opportunities for everybody.” True, but it also opens up a question. Which DMV artist is actually prepared, right now, to take advantage of the opportunities opened up by Wale’s success? And don’t refer to that bogus WKYS beauty contest, the Hottest 10 DMV Rappers. That’s just a marketing tool for the radio station. Come up with a name on your own; someone you’ve listened to, who’s show you’ve attended, who has more than one song, on one mixtape that makes you believe in their talent and potential. You need a moment? Here’s some help. Check out our OnStage Video Showcase.

picture of vinyl recordsMusic is such a personal preference. Even with a particular genre what makes one person smile may tickle another to death. So OnStage is dedicated to providing a broad array of music videos for our viewers. Sure you see a lot of Hip Hop, but you also see R&B and jazz and rock and pop. And you see local artists, some of them in the early stages of their careers, others more established. Same thing with our other videos. Bottom line is we want you to find something you like every time you visit OnStage. Obviously, we’d love it if you would share a link with your Facebook friends and Twitter followers. It’s our brand, but it’s your music. Let us know what you want to see and we’ll do our best to make it happen. Get our updates on Twitter @onstagejc

picture of jenee bevettHow do you become a real Diva in the music industry? The one that UK soul legend Omar calls for every US tour? Put in the work! And that’s what Jenee Bevett, whose video “Unreasonable” we are so proud to feature in the OnStage Video Showcase has done.

Jenee developed her talent singing in the church choir as a child. Her mother is a pianist and her father a percussionist, and both sing as well. After college she began gigging around the DMV area with various bands and projects. That was 15 years ago! Her first live performance was with the great DC band Suttle Thoughts.

She’s sung with Ja-Michael and Co., an acoustic project, then joined the band Congregation, led by David Boris. Following that, she joined with Cornell Pearce to co-found Alternate Root showcasing original tunes with a rock & roll edge.

For the past three years Jenee, Cornell, and Giovani Travez have been performing around the DMV area as the acoustic group JC featuring original music and covers of classic rock, R&B, and reggae tunes. You can, and definitely should, catch their next show on Thursday, August 18th (7pm) at the New Deal Café in Greenbelt, MD.
